The Dark World is a gloomy, extra dimensional underworld. Any human who enters or is brought into this underworld is petrified into stone. The Dark Witch Selene used powerful magic to create a nexus that sucked the school and everyone inside into the Dark World. It is where the Labyrinth of Night resides.
